This salt is one of the best salts on earth. This salt is from a small salt farmer in Rio Major. The salt is screened by hand and foreign matter is also sorted out by hand. Only 12 tons of salt are produced there every year! That's why the quality is always excellent.
In the salt pans of Marinhas do Sal near Aveiro, the spring water salt from Portugal is still laboriously extracted by hand. This salt is a primeval salt that was created around 200 million years ago when a primeval sea dried out. The salt is washed out of the rock by underground watercourses and emerges in springs as brine on the earth's surface.
The traditional spring salt is still extracted by hand in the old way. Hardly any other method has brought purer and higher quality salt to light than traditional artisan mining. Only with this gentle degradation process does the salt retain its pure, crystalline form. To dry the salt, it is shoveled onto wooden platforms in the shape of a pyramid.
According to tradition, the ancient Romans are said to have used the salt dome and its springs. However, prehistoric finds from the area suggest that salt was mined much earlier. This spring salt is probably unique in Europe in terms of the type of deposit and has long been considered the best salt in Portugal.
